18 CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL TO HAVE SIGNED A FORMAL COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY ÑUÑOINA
mid-2007 RED BY CITIZEN ÑUÑOA began his signature campaign to gather 10% of the electoral roll of the municipality to call for a plebiscite community from citizens, as the only possible to stop the destruction of the neighborhoods of Providencia , after the imposition Mayor Pedro Sabat urban policies that only benefit the property market.
Despite strong opposition demands that the citizenship law to submit to popular verdict such important matters such as quality of life or the kind of neighborhoods they want to live, has been collected so far, more than 8 000 ñuñoinos notarized signatures on the registers of the commune election, the 12 000 needed to force the mayor to call a plebiscite community. However, the law does not allow its conclusion in the same year that makes a popular choice.
Given the current scenario of the commune election, and on the understanding that those who apply for municipal elected positions, must provide guarantees of a real commitment to their constituents on the main local issues in the commune, the Citizen Network for ÑUÑOA decided to call, candidates for mayor and council members, regardless of political stripe, to speak out clearly address the social disruption and urban Ñuñoa, produced by the aggressive onslaught of the real estate sector in the districts of the municipality, led by the mayor Sabat.
To do so, was distributed to the various candidates to the municipality of Providencia, a letter requesting a sign on a within a week, a solemn commitment to the community ñuñoina for the first task to be elected convene a community referendum, under the powers granted by law to mayors or two thirds of the members of City Council, and on the same terms as 8 000 ñuñoinos ratify his signature notarized.
The result showed clearly who are about to open real channels of citizen participation in the future management of local government and those sectors which are still reluctant to incorporate these necessary democratic practices in the way of governing a municipality, such as the current mayor Sabat , now wants to be reelected with his councilors Claudia Vera, Andrés Monckeberg Zarhi and Gerardo, who have wholeheartedly supported his management questioned building industry.
Other candidates of the Alliance for Chile, just not answered the call, and none of the candidates of the Independent Regional Party, PRI.
not get a response from a candidate for re-election and now the Christian Democratic Councilman Jaime Castillo, who has been a staunch ally of the Sabbath to defend the interest of the real estate industry.
This opens a promising way for the thousands of ñuñoinos that our freedoms have been eroded off the mayor's authoritarian management Sabat, who has won the mayor's chair at the expense of populism and misuse of public resources of the commune, as is now known publicly.
